Headcanons/Timeline etc
TIMELINE;

HEADCANONS;
-Leonardo has lost his connection to his ninpo. Early on he could still create portals and tap into the family magic even with Krang interference. Being able to only wield one katana comfortably meant he used it even less. As time went on, he lost his ability to tap into it.
-He has a few tattoos on his leg. The tattoos are pretty personal to him, and Leo isn't completely interested in explaining the meaning. Only difference between linked image is he has some flowers in an array of colors (red, orange, purple, yellow and a teal) in one spot to represent his family members. He has another tattoo on his other leg, a dragon drawn by Casey Jr.
-Leo dated a few men on and off. Briefly serious with Usagi, before that ended extremely poorly via Usagi's death. Never settled on anything serious after. The idea of dating seems impossible to him. He likes a casual flirt, but isn't one to search for anything particularly long term.
-Leo's arm was mangled in such a way they had to cut off what was left. He has a shoulder port where his prosthetic clicks into place. The weight of his current prosthetic is chafing his skin around his shoulder and chipping the edge of his shell it grinds against. He tries to keep it covered up best he can.
-Leo will never tell you how he lost his arm. Constantly changing the narrative. Only his direct family know what happened. Lost the arm protecting Casey, but doesn't blame the kid for what happened.
-Knows fairly thorough first aid. Not a trained doctor, but knows his way around field medicine for emergency situations. Has done in field surgery at least once or twice.
-Has an iron stomach. Rarely gets queasy these days. He's picky about flavors, but can essentially eat anything.
-Has a hard time typing with his metal hand. Struggles with modern technology because of it. Touch screens are the bane of his existence.
-Feels uncomfortable when not wearing clothing, so always has loose fitted pants on in some capacity. Occasionally an open shirt or some shoes if he finds any that fit.
-Enjoys fashion, but ends up keeping his choices extremely basic and functional. Why bother worrying about being fancy?
-Knows ASL, be it a three fingered variant of it.
MISC;
-Lost a lot of interest in sweet foods.
-Doting parent to Casey, even if they never officially used father & son due to Leonardo's fear of dying on Casey. He didn't want to be another dead parent in this poor kids life.
-A cardshark, when able to actually play any game was excellent at poker.
-Volunteered for nearly every position on base to try and learn everyones roles equally.
-Suppressed a lot of his own bombastic personality for the good of the rebellion. Comes off as very straight laced when that isn't the case.
-Cringe Lord Supreme. He is figuring out how to live at 40, give him a break.

For how I contextualize his magic use- I tend to play it as Leo needs to conduct his magic through an object to keep it more controlled over all. If he's using a lot of magic to open a portal or create a weapon, he needs to conduct that energy somewhere. Trying to bare handed use magic is not the best option for him. Since he's suddenly blasting a ton of energy through himself without anywhere to inherently place it.
If he has a katana, he can use that to conduct the energy forward to a portal. If he has a rock or base weapon, he can conduct the energy into that to make a magic katana. He doesn't have to think about where the magic is going or how to maintain it if he has an object to pool it into. He needs a conductor to maintain a safe use of ninpo.
When sharing ninpo or connecting someone to it, he's opening himself up to them. He isn't trying to form his magic into a direct action or shape that needs to be focused on in the same way. He is inviting them to join him and share in his abilities. This can include feeling a ghost of Leonardo's own feelings towards that other character.
